101 Modak Recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fine suji (semolina)
  • 2 tbsp besan (gram flour)
  • 3–4 tbsp ghee
  • ½ cup khoya (mawa), grated
  • 2 tbsp desiccated coconut
  • ½ liter full cream milk
  • 1 pinch saffron strands (optional, soaked in warm milk)
  • ½ cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp rose water or kewra water
  • Chopped almonds for richness

Instructions

  1. Roast the Suji
    • Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a heavy kadai.
    • Add fine suji and roast on low flame for about 5 minutes until aromatic.
    • Add besan and mix well with suji.
  2. Add Khoya & Coconut
    • Add grated khoya and roast until it softens and blends well.
    • Mix in desiccated coconut for extra flavor.
  3. Boil the Milk
    • In another pan, boil ½ liter milk.
    • Add saffron strands while boiling for color and aroma.
  4. Combine Milk & Mixture
    • Add sugar to the khoya-suiji mixture.
    • Slowly pour hot milk and stir continuously on medium flame.
    • Cook until mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the kadai.
  5. Flavoring & Cooling
    • Add cardamom powder and rose water.
    • Cook until dough-like consistency forms.
    • Spread mixture in kadai, let it rest for 5–10 minutes until slightly cool.
  6. Shape the Modaks
    • Use a modak mould to shape small modaks.
    • Grease mould with ghee, press mixture, remove excess, and demould.
    • Repeat until all 101 modaks are shaped.
  7. Serve & Offer
    • Your 101 Modaks for Ganpati Bappa are ready.
    • Offer as prasad and share with family and neighbors.
